Following up on our prominent cover story on what can happen if the Trump administration and Republican Congress fail to enact border security initiatives, Donald Trump’s senior adviser and senior counselor Stephen Miller recently announced that the Republicans have unveiled a plan to build a wall on the southern border of the US. Trump’s message: “We have all of the facts.”
In the weeks since, the Republican government has made one proposal and announced a second one. In two weeks, Congress will resume discussions about the wall, and Trump will probably make a third proposal. While the president expressed frustration with Congress for not doing enough to support border security, experts are focused on other elements of the plan that require bipartisan cooperation.
This week, Time magazine published a cover cartoon by Tyler Stout that portrays Trump’s friend Kanye West in a second, fortified prison for undocumented immigrants. In the cartoon, a bear is yelling at a building named for Kim Jong-un. The editorial message is simple, but significant. “Donald Trump’s strength is creating obstacles and confrontation, even if the result is the same, and then blaming his problems on someone else.”
