Xander Schauffele is not the first winner of a major golf tournament to confess he owes his victory to the “hogs” in his family.
The American claimed the first win of his career in the Masters last year aged just 23, but said all the pressure heaped on his father, Benjamin, made the win extra special.
“He wasn’t resting on his laurels,” he said.
“He was like, ‘don’t let this slip off your back’ and he stressed it to me every single day.”
While Schauffele went on to finish 11th in the Players Championship this year, his father continued to work on his golf swing.
“My dad was like, ‘when you finish this season I’ll quit and then you can be real proud of yourself’ – and it was working,” Schauffele added.
“I’ll always carry it with me, we can just make a weekend of it.”
Schauffele became the youngest man to win a major when he claimed the US PGA tour’s Travelers Championship, also by just one shot.
