King Charles, the last reigning British monarch to spend a full 24 days in Washington as guest of the United States, welcomed South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa to the White House for the first time Monday afternoon.

Ramaphosa, who became South Africa’s president in February after serving as deputy president, welcomed the outgoing British prime minister Theresa May.

“Mr. President, please take the time to shake our hands,” President Donald Trump said, as the two leaders embraced for several minutes. “You’re going to be an absolutely terrific president.”

Ramaphosa is scheduled to attend the U.S. National Prayer Breakfast on Wednesday, according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

“I think the day is long gone when visiting American presidents should not come to the White House,” Sanders said Friday. “The best way to demonstrate American leadership is to host our partners at the White House.”

Trump spent the past three days in Europe on a five-day visit that included trips to the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. He met with his counterparts from those countries.
