Nick Kyrgios complains of marijuana smell during US Open second round win against Nishikori

Marijuana smoke was not the only thing that seemed to have affected Nick Kyrgios throughout the second round of the US Open.

The Australian Open champion was struggling to finish things on the grass surface at the US Open – and after he had been eliminated by his long-time rival, Roger Federer – and the world number one was having a go at his partner, Alexander Brändle, and his team.

Kyrgios was unhappy with the service, and was upset to see his shot clock read 2 hours and 39 minutes before he hit his final ball.

He later said: “It’s been a crazy couple of days, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. I’m not the same player I was playing against a week ago.

“I felt fine playing against Federer. He just got on a roll. I feel fine against anyone in tennis, but against Federer I felt like I’ve lost a step, like I was moving at half-speed.

“I’ve got to get used to playing on grass again.”

Kyrgios also complained of nausea, and was told by his coach to drink water. The Aussie was forced to retire when he was hit with a ball at 4-3 in the third.

Kyrgios has now won the last four Grand Slams, and is trying to go one better in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old was on the verge of a new career-best after his 3-2 victory over world number two Kei Nishikori, who was coming off a disappointing performance at the ATP World Tour Finals last week.

Nishikori was trying to make amends for a last-four defeat at the Indian Wells Masters to the eighth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga earlier this month.
