Mikel Arteta has spoken to Eddie Nketiah and said he hopes the young forward will stay with Arsenal beyond this season. Arsene Wenger said earlier this week that the club would not be ready to offer a new contract to the 20-year-old left-winger and was open to talking about selling him if a club was prepared to offer him a big move.
“We’ve had a couple of conversations to have another look. We’re not there yet and Eddie’s not there either,” Arteta said at an Arsenal Foundation event. “So, in my opinion, until he plays more games, it would be a risk, and then the same could happen.
“I don’t know, we’ll see, and we will try to keep him, hopefully, but it’s a tough market when you want to bring in a young player.”
Arteta is hopeful that Nketiah will stay with the club and push to fight for his place. “I just hope he gets the chance to play more games — I think he needs to prove what he can do. He needs to be given the opportunity,” he said.
