NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Eric Staal and Jakub Voracek each had a goal and two assists to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night.
Nic Petan, Sebastian Aho and Brock McGinn also scored for the Hurricanes, who ended a three-game skid. Scott Darling made 35 saves.
Brayden McNabb, Damon Severson and Mike Cammalleri scored for the Devils, who missed a chance to overtake the idle Rangers for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Cory Schneider made 32 saves.
The Hurricanes struck for three goals in the first 4:18.
McNabb gave the Devils a lead just 2:41 in. Aho scored his first goal in the season-opening season just 2:23 later. Staal gave the Hurricanes the lead on the power play 1:28 later.
McNabb thought he had tied it just 2:20 later but he had the goal disallowed for goaltender interference. Then the Hurricanes scored twice in a 5-second span to go up 3-1 on goals by Voracek and Petan.
Severson, with the Devils’ first goal, cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the second period, but McGinn restored the two-goal margin. Aho added an empty-netter.
Schneider was solid all night but couldn’t find a way to stop Staal, who scored his first of the season 1:46 into the game. Darling made a glove save on Michael Chaput’s deflection attempt on the power play less than a minute later.
McNabb put the Devils on the board 2:41 into the game with his first of the season.
