Arson burns Kuwait oil refinery

A fire broke out Wednesday at the Al Husaima oil refinery in Kuwait City, and six people were injured in the blast and subsequent fight to put it out, Kuwait Oil Co. said in a statement.

The refinery produces around 500,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), or about 15 percent of Kuwait’s output. The company said output at the refinery “was not impacted and normal operations continue.”

The company said the three emergency vehicles deployed to the scene “did not have a direct connection with the refinery, and so the situation was considered as a complex one.”

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

Kuwait Oil Co. said security teams were checking the area.

Kuwait Petroleum Corp. is the Kuwaiti state oil firm, which operates the refinery with the Kuwait National Petroleum Co. (KNPC).

The fire broke out near the refinery’s main tank, two wellhead gas turbine units, and wellhead crack pipes, the KNPC said.

KNPC did not give details on the condition of the injured workers.

Kuwait’s largest private employer, KNPC is set to merge with its parent company by 2021 as part of efforts to cut the country’s sizable state budget deficit.

Kuwait has been planning to sell as much as 30 percent of KNPC and the capital of Kuwait National Petroleum Co.
